“Dark Side of the Moon”
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
I have never been one to read vampire stories. I figure that life is too hard to worry about undead creatures that have a liquid diet and can’t survive in the daylight. Hmm, that description sounds remarkably like college students to me.
But somehow this book attracted my attention when I was looking at the collection to see what books haven’t circulated since the year 2000. This book had circulated once and that had been an InterLibrary Loan. Hmmm … I looked closer. We aren’t to judge a book by its cover, but this cover holds a dark figure on top of a building with a city skyline at night in the background. That reminded me of Batman and Spiderman — you always see them at night, saving, if not the universe, at least the glowing town of where ever they live.
I read the book jacket and thought about what the school library media specialist said about what teens like to read at Wamogo. “Vampires, I can’t keep them on the shelves.” Okay then I will read vampires.
Once you get over the idea of “ords“, Squires, and Dark Hunters. Once you get past the idea that the Greek Gods and Goddesses are alive and well and that Artemis was supposed to be the “virgin” (emphasis on the virgin) Goddess of hunting. You can happily get into the book.
The main character, Susan seems to have done much in her life which prepares her for this book: she is an orphan, she has earned a high degree in martial arts and is also a participant in the Society for Creative Anachronism so that she has experience in sword play. Basically just your normal thirty something woman looking for a fulfilling job and relationship. But if we hold tightly to our willing suspension of disbelief. Though it isn’t an intellectual thriller, this is a great book to kill a few hours with and see into a different reality.
